The 7xwords project began based on the idea that there are 312 grid patterns for a 7x7 crossword following the standard American rules that there must not be unchecked letters or two letter words, and that the grids must be connected and rotationally symmetric. This is exactly enough to publish six puzzles a week for a 52-week year.
