Chemical reactions in which an element in one reactant is reduced, while an element in another reactant is oxidized. In this sense, "reduced" means the oxidation state or valence state is lowered, while "oxidized" means the oxidation state is increased. This type of reaction is associated with a transfer of electrons from the oxidized element to the reduced one.
