The seven modes (Ionian, Dorian, Phyrgian, Lydian, Mixoltdian, Aeolian, and Locrian) correspond to starting scales on each of the seven notes A-G, are related to the familiar concepts of major and minor keys, and have names derived from ancient Greek music (and named for regions and subgroups of the ancient Greeks and their neighbors) which were reused in the development of western musical theory in medieval times.
