Forsyth-Edwards Notation is a way of encoding a chess position into a short string. The board is described row by row, in lexical order (so starting from rank 8). White pieces are represented by their conventional capital letters, black pieces by the corresponding lower case letters, and numbers indicate consecutive runs of that many empty spaces. Slashes separate the rows. Additional symbols after the board indicate other aspects of the game state.
