Usually this refers to the 20 amino acids encoded by 3-base codons in the genetic code and 3 stop codons. (In some species, stop codons can instead encode additional amino acids.) Amino acids have both one-letter and three-letter canonical abbreviations and the stop codons are associated with colors.
