24.917 — Faux-netics Solution
Solve the clues (most of which are simple trivia, but there are
some other types):
- ALF
- JAMAICA. In November 1997 they qualified for the 1998 World
Cup, so this was news at the time of this hunt. The only prior
Caribbean countries in the World Cup were Cuba and Haiti, which
are not English-speaking countries. It's spelled the same way in
Spanish, but presumably the (Sp.) is there for the phonetics.
- SIOUX is the major tribe in the Dakotas, and the tribes named
Dakota are likewise part of the Sioux.
- NUCH? "quv" is Klingon for honor. Based on the way Klingon
honor is portrayed in ST:TNG, I found this word for
"coward". It's pronounced roughly "nooch"
- HALLOWED
- PINE (goes before the given words)
- OS (goes after the given words)
- HOUND (The Hound of the Baskervilles, a Sherlock Holmes
novel, though it's the name of a family, not a place as the clue
implies)
- ?
- ORB (anagram of bro)
- HELL ("Halfway to Hell" is painted at the midpoint of the
Harvard Bridge next to the smoot distance markings)
- ZOO
- I'LL (Schwarzenegger catchline originally from The
Terminator)
- DEW (Mountain Dew slogan)
- WINNING
- FUR
- SIN (pronounced like "seen" in Spanish)
- CRIB
- ?
Based on the title, this is most likely an Anguish Languish or
similar phonetic puzzle in which the sequence of answers forms
another clue phonetically, with many liberties taken in matching
the phonetics. For instance, the S from OS and all of HOUND
probably combine to make "SOUND", even though the S makes a Z
sound in OS.
However this clue works, it's supposed to lead to the answer DECODING.
