19.667 — Grid Puzzles and Their Variations Solution

The clue answers don't appear to fit in the grid. (Possible clue answers below.) In addition, if we take the black squares as the word breaks they would usually represent in word puzzles, some rows have too few or too many entry spaces, and the answers we can come up with do not appear to fit into them conventionally.

Perhaps we have to modify the grid somehow to make things fit. Taking it as a Game of Life grid and running generations doesn't seem to work.

Perhaps the shaded squares aren't meant as crossword-style black squares but ones to extract somehow,

Since we are told the answers in each row may not go in int the order given, there must be some theme that explains how to enter them (maybe also allowing the identification of more answers), but no such theme has been identified.
