This most commonly refers to Linnaean binomial nomenclature, the system by which every genus and species pair is chosen to be unique across all life. However, it can refer to any named applying to any level in the classification system. Traditionally, that system had seven levels: Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, and Species. In modern times, Domains or Empires have been proposed as supersets over the Kingdoms, and various sub- and super- variants inserted into the tree to account for branches in evolutionary development.
